Abstract

This study examines the social integration of Korean immigrants in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC). Drawing upon the theoretical frameworks of Émile Durkheim, Edna B. Foa and Uriel G. Foa, it reconceptualises social integration by extending its relationship with Resource Theory. It then interprets the lived experiences of Korean immigrants through in-depth interviews, exploring the factors that facilitate or hinder their integration into Vietnamese society. The findings highlight the socio-cultural realities shaping the lives of Korean immigrants, including language proficiency, cultural attitudes, religious practices, and the challenges of navigating cultural differences. Furthermore, Koreans in HCMC express various frustrations and constraints relating to housing, the quality of medical services, and apprehensions about participating in road traffic, all of which emerge as significant barriers to social integration. The study adopted a qualitative research design, employing in-depth interviews with 25 participants. All interviews were conducted face-to-face and lasted approximately one hour on average. Interviews were carried out in English, Vietnamese, and Korean, with interpreter support provided where necessary. All identifying information was rigorously anonymised, and participants' personal details were replaced with symbolic codes.
